for you, too!
Pinecrest's collection of approximately 300 fireplace mantel designs is in-
spired by a broad range of styles and motifs from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Since each design is custom made, they can create one for
you that meets your exact specifications and needs, such as the stunning surround pictured below!
The relatively simple, but very elegant design that follows harkens from the 18th century and is ideal for a Colonial Style home. It features a beautiful white enameled finish.
The design pictured below draws its inspiration from
Greek Revival archi-
tecture, which was popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, par-
ticularly in Northern Europe and the United States. It features fluted col-
umns, Ionic capitals, and a Greek key pattern in the frieze, just below the top of the mantel shelf.
Moving several decades forward, the late Victorian-era fireplace mantle de-
signs pictured at right and below show much less restraint in their ornamen-
tation. Typical of the period, the dec-
oration of homes and furnishings was inspired and influenced by an eclectic revival and interpretation (or reinter-
pretation) of historic styles, as well as the introduction of cross-cultural influ-
ences from the Middle East and Asia.
The wood fireplace surround that follows was inspired by the work of 19th century British architect and
furniture designer, Charles Eastlake (1836-
1906). Typical of the Eastlake Style, the fireplace mantle features geomet-
ric ornamentation, spindles, low relief carvings and incised lines.
By the latter part of the 19th century, many viewed the exuberant orna-
mentation of late Victorian-era, i.e., Queen Anne architecture, as "exces-
sive." As a result, there was a movement in America to "get back to our roots," during which time many Americans discovered a renewed apprecia-
tion for their own heritage and architecture from the Colonial past.
The Colonial Revival Movement
sparked a renewed interest in 18th century provincial Georgian and Neoclassical styles. Generally more restrained
or understated than their Victorian Queen Anne counterparts, Colonial Reviv-
al fireplace mantle designs featured classical motifs such as paired col-
umns, paneled friezes, and egg and dart moulding, as shown in the follow-
Simultaneously, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the ad-
vent of a rapidly rising upper class, enormous fortunes were created in America. Feeling that American architecture and design was simply not grand enough, many of the newly rich looked to Europe for inspiration.
Monumental fireplace surrounds, such as the stunning Olde World European example pictured below, was just what they were looking for! Beautifully carved, this magnificent mahogany mantelpiece is crowned with a richly finished hooded overmantel bearing a coat of arms.
During the 1920s and 1930s, period revival styles based on European prec-
edents became widely popular in North America among the middle and up-
per middle classes, as well. The French-inspired design that follows is also beautifully crafted and appropriate for a period revival room or home. Finely carved with a limed wood finish, it includes both an elegant mantel and an overmantel.
The timelessness of these designs ensures they will continue to endure for generations to come . . . . . as they have endured for generations -- even centuries -- before. Having withstood the test of time, they convey a sense of history, permanence, stability and continuity through their linkage of the present with the past.
Pinecrest's commitment to quality craftsmanship and fine detailing ensures that each wood fireplace surround
they produce will also continue to en-
dure for many years to come. With nearly six decades of experience and more than one million installations to date, their repertoire of styles and finishes is virtually limitless!
