The stone fireplace hearth . . . few things are as warm and inviting as a crackling wood fire in a cozy stone fireplace. The aroma, sights and sounds take us back to the romance of an earlier time -- at least momentarily -- and remind us of the simple pleasures in life.
The sheer ambiance and charm of a fire in a great stone hearth is unfor-
gettable. The cares of the world
seem to melt away as our minds transport us to a gentler time.
A stone fireplace hearth can be crafted from a wide range of
stone types, sizes, shapes, colors, textures and finishes . . . . . . . to achieve an even wider range of different looks. For
example, the three designs that follow are dramatically different in appearance and style. On the left, the
urally round river stones contrast sharply with the precisely cut stone blocks of the design on the right -- both traditional in style. The transi-
tional or contemporary design pictured beneath them is comprised of widely varying shapes and sizes of cut stone veneer.
Conversely, the following stacked stone design, with close-up on the right, is crafted from large boulders,
stone blocks and slabs. The massive stone
lintel above the
firebox opening supports an assemblage of
fieldstones in random sizes and shapes. Though the overall composition is intended to look as if it were simply "thrown
together," this design by Luderowski Archi-
tects was carefully conceived and meticulously crafted!
The following multi-story Great Rooms with soaring stone hearths were de-
signed by Mackin Architects. Though both are traditional in style, they differ greatly in overall appearance, i.e., stone size, shape, color and con-
figuration. However, each design features a raised stone hearth and a stone mantel shelf.
In addition to Great Rooms and living rooms, a stone fireplace hearth is a great addition to kitchens and
breakfast areas, such as the striking field-
stone design pictured below . . . . .
. . . as well as bedrooms, such as those pictured at right and below.
Similarly, a stone hearth is a great way to anchor an
outdoor room. Avail-
able in a vast array of unique styles ranging from traditional (below, left and bottom) to contemporary (below right), the outdoor hearth can be tailor-made to match the architectural style of your home!
