Typical stone types used to build country stone fireplaces include granite, sandstone, fieldstone, quartzite and river rock. The following two examples are crafted from granite.

The fireplace below (left) is made from fieldstone, while the one on the right is made from quartzite.

The two fireplaces below with smooth round stones are crafted from river rock.

Another popular "stone type," due to its lighter weight and lower cost, is manufactured stone.    Commonly called cultured stone, an actual brand name, it is very realistic in appearance and comparable to that of natural stone. The photos below show a variety of manufactured stone types and looks.

For a European country look . . . more specifically, Country French . . . the following examples are hard to beat for ambiance and period charm. Craft-
ed from limestone and crowned with overmantels, one of which is brick, they lend a great deal of authenticity to their settings.
